Just the thought of the Firethroat makes me think of the Siberian Rubythroat or even the Bluethroat, birds with fantastic throat displays; but they are not like that all the time. Breeding and wintering plumage are different from each other and they are very surprising when they wear the best colours for breeding. When we were in Nam Kham Nature Reserve last February, the bird was on it winter plumage and that throat is almost white and no sign of being on fire. We are really excited to return in April so we could get the bird on fire.
The Near Threatened Firethroat breeds in Sichuan, China and winters in Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Tibet, Nepal, Myanmar, and also in Thailand especially at Nam Kham Nature Reserve in Chiang Rai. Its natural habitat is temperate forest but in Nam Kham Nature Reserve, reed bed.
