The Greater Adjutant or Leptoptilos dubius is a big bird in the Stork family or the Ciconiidae; its genus includes the Lesser Adjutant of Asia which is Vulnerable, and the marabou stork of Africa. This bird is one of our most favorite birds in the world and it will not change; as if this bird has a soul.

This bird used to be common in southern Asia, India, and Borneo and is now restricted to some areas in the mainland Southeast Asia. It is a carrion and offal eater and yet it is also an opportunistic bird in which it can eat just about anything available.

Here is a portrait of the Greater Adjutant and Arpha Vida Buga-ay is at the background taking photographs of it from her angle. It was a fascinating and a learning experience tod

Arpha Vida Buga-ay and I together with out daughter travelled to Cambodia to get this bird but it was so impossible during that time birding in Cambodia was rather too expensive we decided to just go home and in return we even found the Lesser Adjutant later and this Greater Adjutant this year and thanks a lot to Tle Peawkratoke who has been so kind to help us out with the hotel, location, instructions and the bird that we wanted so badly.

A full body capture of the Greater Adjutant and to fit it landscape position can be tricky.

Today was a super beautiful day as we found the bird to be approachable and kind in so many ways. We felt the emotion that this bird was going through as it is rather difficult for habitat destination to sustain migrants. But then thanks a lot to the brave and hard working people who made the Sarus Crane reintroduction program a massive success. This program included all the species that come to migrate and even the residents. The community has been educated and people has become part of such a massive conservation effort. Today the Sarus Crane Reintroduction Program has encouraged infrastructure in which the rugged and muddy road around the lake has become now a world class bike lane with observation towers, view point watch areas, and building that will provide some needs to people coming everyday.
